Punish the victim
November 17, 2007
From the Sydney Morning Herald, a profoundly disturbing example of what can happen when a country’s laws are based on religion:
A SAUDI court has more than doubled the number of lashes that a female rape victim was sentenced to last year after her lawyer appealed against the original sentence. The decision, which many lawyers found shocking even by Saudi standards of justice, has provoked a rare public debate about the treatment of women.
Lashes? For a rape victim?
A 19 year old girl meets with her ex-boyfriend to get some photos back. They are caught together by a group of men and they are both gang raped. In the ensuing court case, the victims are each sentenced to 90 lashes for being in the car together. The rapists receive relatively light sentences. The victim complains about this and she gets her lashes upped to 200 and 6 months in jail.
I mean what?
This poor child was attacked and subjected to a horrific ordeal, and the legal system that should be protecting her will instead see her horribly punished because its vile repressive laws are based on stupid two thousand year old sexist, xenophobic, religious dogma.*
And people don’t understand why I think religion should be kept out of politics.
